Baptism stamps a permanent "character" on a person; therefore, one cannot be baptized again. But what does a baptized person do if he sins again? The Sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation returns God's Life into our soul. Jesus gave His first priests the grace of absolving ("taking away") sins when He appears to them on the Sunday of His Resurrection and breathes upon them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them." (John 20:22-23)

A young Catholic makes his first Confession usually in 2nd grade; that is, the age of reason, which is around 8 years old. A baptized Christian who wants to become a Catholic will make his/her first Confession prior to their full profession of Catholic faith and his receiving of Confirmation and Holy Communion. Yet this is only his "first Confession"; many others will follow, because we are weak, imperfect, impatient and sinful human beings. Far from being a burden, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a path to freedom from the tyranny of sin...and the path to real joy in the Holy Spirit. It is a real rebirth.
